Litchi: The Sweet Taste of Summer (with Images!)
Welcome to my blog! Today, we’re diving into the delightful world of litchis, the quintessential summer fruit. If you’ve never tried one, or if you’re already a fan, this guide will celebrate everything that makes this bumpy, sweet fruit so special.
Let’s start with how they grow. Litchis don’t just appear in the grocery store; they thrive in warm, subtropical climates.
1. The Litchi Orchard in Bloom

Before the fruit, come the flowers. Litchi trees are evergreen with glossy green leaves. In early spring, they produce massive clusters of tiny, pale yellow-green flowers. It’s a subtle but beautiful transformation that signals the coming harvest. The entire orchard smells faintly sweet and alive with bees.

As the spring turns to summer, those flowers drop, and the fruit begins to form.
2. Up Close: The Ripening Fruit

When the litchis are ready for harvest, they hang in heavy, dense clusters, much like grapes but much heavier. The most striking thing about a ripe litchi is its skin. It’s a vibrant, leathery, pinkish-red, covered in small, sharp bumps. This protective “alligator skin” hides the treasure inside.
In this next close-up, you can see the texture right on the branch, just waiting to be picked.

3. Peeling and Serving

Finally, we get to the best part: eating them! The tough skin is actually quite easy to peel. You simply pinch the stem end or make a small nick, and the rind zips right off.
Once peeled, you are rewarded with the translucent, pearly-white flesh. It is incredibly juicy, sweet, and fragrant, with a flavor that hints at rosewater and grape.
Inside the flesh is a single, smooth, dark brown seed (which is not edible).
Here is how I like to enjoy them: chilled and fresh.

Litchis are fantastic on their own, but they also elevate fruit salads, cocktails, and desserts. Their arrival is fleeting, so when you see them in season during the summer months, make sure to grab a bunch!
Thanks for joining me on this visual tour of the litchi! Let me know in the comments how you like to enjoy this sweet summer treat.
